Deep Meditation, Kriya Yoga and Kundalini Awakening

What Is Enlightenment and How Do You Achieve It?

Ever since I had known about Paramhansa Yogananda, I have always longed to be "enlightened." By "enlightenment" I do not mean in the usual intellectual sense, but as a state of "yoga" or union with one's higher Self, which is very much in tune with the truth and with the manifested creation we all dwell in. The kind of enlightenment I am writing about is a permanent happiness and fulfillment above and beyond the trials and tribulations of worldly existence. Enlightenment is a freedom from addiction and the enjoyment of a kind of emotional independence or nearly perfect maturity. This whole page is about a "yoga" of meditation for enlightenment.

I am not saying or implying that I am enlightened as a "Buddha" or "Krishna" would be. I am far from perfect, and if I was perfect, why would I even bother aspiring to anything? However, I have been very interested in the subject for many, many years, and no doubt learned much about the higher yogas and everything that the task of achieving enlightenment implies in all my own serious and sincere "trial and error" attempts. I have fasted for days, lived on 100% raw food diets, been on long mountain retreats with dozens of other yogis, meditated the entire night until dawn outside in the cold non-stop, done yoga postures until I felt like a pretzel, been initiated by gurus into complex yogic exercises and various forms of meditation, and tried celibacy for as long as I could stand it.

So it seems very, very difficult at times, having to seemingly go against one's very own instincts, and practice hours and hours of sadhanna (yoga and meditation) every day which seemed to use up much more than just my spare time! No matter how hard I tried, no matter how much self-discipline I had, no matter how determined, I simply could not get anywhere. In fact, the only thing that changed was that my anxiety and depression (unfortunate tendencies of mine) gradually got worse! In the end I simply became too tired to do anything! I had to quit, otherwise there would not even be any time or energy left over for basic survival activities!

I really had to redefine where I was coming from, why I wanted "enlightenment" so badly and what it really meant to be "enlightened." I was coming from a state of desperate longing and a basic discontentment with my life and physical or earthly surroundings. I felt very limited, restricted by time, short on money, and especially limited by my body's needs and by my 100% frustrated emotional and psychological needs. It felt like I was an unwilling victim of life, and I often truly regretted being born into this side of "hell" where life on Earth definitely seemed to be at times.

"Enlightenment" as far as I was concerned, meant to be a way out of the drudgery and pain of physical existence or at least a novel perspective on life that would help me see things in a new light and gain answers to the numerous serous problems that had plagued me for years and made my life miserable. "Enlightenment" also meant having a lasting and reliable source of inner joy, bliss, guidance and love. I longed for a personal relationship with the Divine. I longed to find out whether Paramhansa Yogananda's "Divine Mother" really existed or not. Is there a part of ourselves that is immortal? Is there a life after death, and if so what it is like?

It has turned out that the kind of "enlightenment" I have been longing for requires far more elements than I ever imagined and its requirements far more complicated than I ever dreamed. Therefore I experimented with all that I learned and picked up from various sources, personal experiences, teachers, books, etc. I decided to start a journal and write down all I could regarding those aspects of yoga and meditation that worked for me. I even invented new ideas, ideals and techniques that seemed to finally provide some answers.

The Distant Future of Yoga?

In Search of The Godcideon

SLIDESHOW #2:
The Science of Wholeness Concept

ENJOY EVER CHANGING COLORS:
Ever New Joy

What I Have Learned So Far Includes the Following Vital Principles:

1) Cultivation and redirection of sexual desire, and the expansion of sexual energy into absolute bliss, joy, inspiration and love. I have never been able to get anywhere without some form of celibacy! However simply stopping up all one's physical cravings would do more harm than good. One must carefully redirect the sexual energy upward through the spinal centers into an expanded bliss using adaptogenic herbs, short water fasts, infusion of body cells with prana (life force energy) while carefully monitoring and regulating of one's nutritional intake.

2) Don't go vegetarian without first knowing how. First avoid all red meat (pork, lamb, beef...), and replace these with turkey and chicken; and then eat fish in place of turkey and chicken. Then replace fish with cooked eggs and high protein vegetarian food sources. Most people tend to replace meats with cheese, milk and yogurt, which might work out OK for some, but most will encounter some emotional and physical difficulties in many areas of one's life. Much better substitutes for meat include fresh whole eggs, soy, almond, hemp milk, chlorella, and superfood green formulas which all contain proteins, essential oils, and certain vital brain and eye nutrients.

3) The diet and supplements taken must be perfect for the person. In order to succeed at yoga, one's metabolism must be optimized and balanced perfectly. The right supplements, the right herbs, the right food, and the right amount of daily water fasting, must be included every day so that when one sits down or simply pauses, one should feel absolutely relaxed and content. This "pleasant state" is absolutely essential just to begin yoga. Try to avoid as much solid or heavy food as possible. Instead enjoy plenty of raw fruits and vegetable juices, raw kombucha, almond, hemp, rice, oat and soy milks, etc. Avoid cheese, solid fats, oils, fried food, bread, sweet desserts, dried fruit, flower products, or anything else in the way of bulky, solid food because at best, this stuff only takes up room for more biologically valuable nutrients, and at worse, can drain vital mental and spiritual energy, speed up aging, and lead to illness.

4) Know for sure that there is life after death and that the spirit is a real entity. Just having no doubt whatsoever about the reality of Spirit and that there is a universal, eternal justice changes everything in the way one feels, acts and behaves toward life. Life no longer seems like an utterly unfair and nonsensical "hell" but is rather an opportunity to learn from mistakes and grow toward becoming a finer and finer human being. go here for more information about life after death.

5) Know without a shadow of a doubt the oneness of all life! There is only one consciousness or one observer who lives in all sentient beings. One can love others unconditionally (very important), because one now knows that all people everywhere are simply aspects of one great Self, which means one will have to experience eventually everything one does to another person. "Enlightenment" consists mainly of a constant state of unconditional love. One's state of being determines the quality of one's life.

6) Meditate regularly by focusing all one's attention at one spot one inch inside the forehead (third eye) or heart center in middle of chest. Also learn how to deep relax and at least visualize the self leaving the physical body behind. Astral projection provides first hand proof that one is not the body. The body is only a physical vehicle to get around in and the physical brain is needed for the interpretation of all events within the physical dimensions of time and space. One's true nature is space, ecstasy, love, and knowledge all embedded within a unified, but location-free, "quantum" consciousness. Identify with consciousness instead of the physical body.

7) Drink loads of fresh (preferably ionized or alkalized) water between meals instead of snacking. Exercise regularly in an external, natural environment with intent to absorb as much prana as possible into every cell of the body. Also bathe or shower regularly to keep the skin pores open to finer energy, and try to wear only clean clothes everyday because old particles tend to block the absorption and enjoyment of prana. Learn how to live more and more on zero-point cosmic energy (prana) and less and less on physical food.

"Enlightenment," as you can tell, is anything but simple to accomplish, but well worth all the trouble and difficulty once achieved. There are no short-cuts, however it is possible to discover and use more effective and direct methods which I call a kind of "yoga" for meditation. I follow all of the above steps and as a result am enjoying a lifestyle very similar to one who is considered "enlightened." However, I still am far from perfect, and have much more to accomplish. Discovery and growth is what makes life so exciting. Please go here for more vital and more recently updated "spiritual diet" information.

The Celebration of Wholeness

"GARLAND OF THE GODCIDEON"
by R. A. SYMONDS

God is the Most Relishable

You have discovered the source where advanced knowledge regarding the frontiers of human spiritual evolution, living in joy, yoga for meditation, various meditation techniques, and wholeness, etc. can be freely shared and discussed. What is the true meaning and purpose of life? Why are we here, stuck inside this endless, melodramatic space-time scenario we call our lives? Can one escape from the "arrow of time"? How does one go about finding the kind of lasting love and ever new joy that really fulfIlls right to the very core of one's being? Wholeness is God, an ever-changing, yet permanent freedom of boundless energy, joy, awesome love, knowledge, bliss, light, and omniscient awareness. It is very natural for mystics to crave this state, once they have "tasted" it to begin with or have knowledge that it does exist. God is the most relishable.

Living in Joy is Possible with All that I am About to Share with You Here

This website is an information center dedicated to the complete mental emotional, physical and spiritual fulfillment of all people everywhere.

You are reading the first and original page of this "Yoga for Meditation" website now considerably transformed and updated since its first appearance late in 2001 when it had only four pages linked to each other by the above three links! Click on any one of those and they will go to one of the other three original pages.

The purpose of this "Yoga for Meditation" website is to inspire all to live a lifestyle of WHOLENESS (living in joy) through oneness with nature, meditation, raw food, and transmutation of basic energies and emotions into love and bliss. I would embellish this lifestyle further with the practice of Surat Shabd Yoga which is a highly advanced yet relatively simple meditation technique and philosophy of life that one can choose to follow. Regular fasting on ionized water, can help purify the mind and body, hopefully leading one as fast as possible to the highest levels of spiritual realization, joy and freedom. As an example, imagine doing this, but while fasting on ionized water! I am just making suggestions, however, one must research, choose and practice something to get somewhere!

The above meditation techniques, diets, fasting, and many other paths of the "Living in Joy" lifestyle are available here and, as best I know how, are covered in an objective, non-biased way. I never say one path, method, or religion is superior to another. This site is an open knowledge-sharing support center for all sincere and open-minded truth seekers longing to further advance their spiritual nature and become less dependent on materialistic needs.

Because "Science of Wholeness" is an open-minded research site, many links to other websites and related items at amazon.com helpful and/or supportive of the subject of wholeness (living in joy) have been included throughout my web pages to provide you with more interesting, detailed, and relevant illustrations, information and resources. I use links to other sites (which open in a separate window) in my text to illustrate and support my own ideas and provide as much vital, timely and useful subject matter as possible. I will always try to keep you up-to-date with the latest available information, and linked to the most relevant and interesting websites, etc.

My intention is to encourage a philosophy of living in joy in which one finds great satisfaction through a lifestyle of higher wisdom, ever-increasing harmony within one's self and with the environment. I believe it is essential to preserve all ecological systems, and to always love and respect nature!

I am looking for ways to free ourselves from the often short-sighted, stressful and materialistic way of life that leads to mass exploitation and destruction of natural resources. If too much of the world's God-given natural beauty is lost, the quality of life for ourselves and future generations is compromised.

All cities and communities should be designed or transformed only in ways that increase one's quality of life and ability to live in joy, otherwise, what is the reason for living in the first place, if there be no easy access to peaceful, natural beauty in our lives?

Living in joy can begin with your interest in yoga (for meditation) or whatever else it takes to meditate more deeply and feel closer to God and life's purpose. Beauty in the outer environment along with its appreciation and preservation may ultimately depend on the beauty of the inner environment. The first step is to experience wholeness within ourselves through meditation, yoga, and rediscovering our profound relationship with God or Mother Nature: our Creator.

A Simple Meditation Technique

By centering one's awareness at least once a day, while sitting upright and still in a place that is peaceful and safe, one can start to feel a joy from within. It is important to be absolutely comfortable, and fully concentrated on a symbol of God without giving any attention or energy to other thoughts and desires. This is how a cluttered mind full of conflicting motivations is unified into a wondrous sense of inspiration. Meditation can be immensely enhanced by using special audio CDs and courses. I recommend Meditation Haven, which is a gateway to personal and spiritual development featuring a wonderful series of products to bring about stress free living!

Surat Shabd Yoga

For some people, this teaching might be the most direct way to God. Learn more about it here and here. One meditates on the inner sounds, the third eye and on the inner Light of God. Get this meditation technique here. And finally, my own favorite meditation technique can be found here in Lesson #8, Part One of my free, online eBook, The Science of Wholeness.

Kriya Yoga

For a really meaningful and spiritual perspective on meditation, Kriya Yoga and religion, check out some of Paramhansa Yogananda's books, such as Autobiography of a Yogi or the free online edition of Autobiography of a Yogi. Kriya Yoga as taught by Paramhansa Yogananda and the line of gurus he came from, is a "doorway to the Infinite" or path to God and involves a much more complex meditation technique than the ones previously mentioned so far. Learn more about Kriya Yoga here. Kriya Yoga is a complex series of spiritual lessons leading up to an actual initiation into Kriya Yoga, and then there are several stages of Kriya Yoga.

Kundalini

Through understanding, loving and conserving one's sexual energy, and through a healthy lifestyle including raw food, special herbs, antioxidants, daily exercise in a natural environment, meditation, yoga and drinking loads of negatively ionized alkaline water, one can enjoy a powerful transmutation of physical desires into bliss. Staying on a healthy, raw balanced diet is important for a safe and fulfilling kundalini awakening. Most aspects of poor mental and/or physical health can be overcome by the careful conservation of vital sexual fluids, transmutation and expansion of sexual energy into higher centers and levels of expression, and eating mainly a diet high in complete balanced protein, raw food, raw juices, herbs, antioxidants, and plenty of minerals and trace elements, especially calcium and magnesium, while enjoying plenty of exercise! Regular water and juice fasting and meditation outside in a peaceful, natural setting can dramatically aid in the process of blissful kundalini awakening.

Why is it so desirable to raise in the first place? Why bother? What can kundalini do for you? What can be the end result? How magical is it? The kundalini is transmuted sexual energy expanding into all areas of one's body and being. Once fully understood and with the correct nutritional support, lifestyle, etc. the raising of the kundalini is 100% safe, most desirable, most natural and most beautiful. When one is vibrant and healthy to the extent one feels immense bliss and expanding "space" or extreme lightness in every cell of the body, that effect can be considered a form of kundalini awakening. A kundalini awakening as a natural consequence of favorable healthy conditions is a truly wonderful experience. The awakening of kundalini can eventually lead to having great powers, and even immense changes in one's physical cells. Go here for more information regarding the possibilities of spiritual evolution through kundalini awakening and for an interesting, shockingly beautiful animated illustration.

Kundalini Complications and Consequences

There is much anxiety, misunderstanding and mystery regarding the subject of kundalini problems. For some honest clarification on anxiety, diet, kundalini complications, mental health, and importance of leading a balanced lifestyle, go here. If it is forced to awaken by drugs and/or loss of sexual fluids while not eating correctly, then real problems can occur such as severe nerve damage, burning sensations, feeling overwhelmed with too much energy, and/or sensing impending doom, going crazy and out of control. As with all things, one always needs to take as much "holistic" care of one's health as possible. One should always stay as far away from recreational drugs as one can which are notorious for creating extreme anxiety and other terrible emotional and nervous problems. One's health should never be neglected!

If you want to know more about the kundalini, check out these books by Gopi Krishna. Gopi Krishna writes all about his own trials, tribulations and adventures from having his own kundalini prematurely awakened!

God(dess)

All the great religions and their values are essential for all people everywhere to live together in peace and harmony. Religious conflicts and bigotry of any kind is completely contrary to the one Great Truth behind all religions that the Great Spirit is trying to express. The Spirit of God works through all living beings. All life forms, animals, plants, etc. are priceless gems of God's expression and are to be given the utmost respect.

Make God(dess) the Center of Your Life!

Through prayer, sensitivity and receptivity, it becomes easier to handle stress and cope with one's needs. By making the expression of God and all His values the central purpose of your life, and by realizing that your highest and sincerest heartfelt desires are really what God wants for you, you can start to find wholeness in your life. Make the search for higher consciousness (TheMystic.org) your highest priority rather than painful, frustrating or conflicting desires!

The Holy Science - This extraordinary treatise explores parallel passages from the Bible and the Hindu scriptures to reveal the essential unity of all religions. Swami Sri Yukteswar is renowned as the revered guru of the great pioneer of yoga in the West, Paramahansa (or Paramhansa) Yogananda (author of Autobiography of a Yogi). In this remarkable work - composed in the year 1894 at the request of the great Indian sage, Mahavatar Babaji - Sri Yukteswar outlines the universal path that every human being must travel to enlightenment. He also explains the vast recurring cycles of history - the yugas that mark the upward ascent of human consciousness over millenniums - amid the ever-changing panorama of turbulent world events.

Man's Eternal Quest: Collected Talks and Essays - Volume 1 - For all who have ever sought to understand the enigmas of life, for those who have held within their hearts an uncertain hope about the reality of God, and for seekers who have already turned toward the Supreme in their quest, this anthology of talks by the author of Autobiography of a Yogi offers illuminating insights and encouragement. In its pages, Paramahansa Yogananda explores little-known and rarely explained aspects of such subjects as meditation, life after death, health and healing, the unlimited powers of the human mind, the equality of man and woman, and the interrelatedness of all life.

The Divine Romance - Collected Talks and Essays. Volume 2 - The Divine Romance includes over fifty talks and essays by Paramahansa Yogananda. Readers will find these talks alive with the unique blend of all-embracing wisdom, encouragement, and love for humanity that have made the author one of our era's most trusted guides to the spiritual life. The second book in a trilogy, which includes, Man's Eternal Quest and Journey to Self-realization - each of which are packed with information covering a vast range of spiritual topics - The Divine Romance speaks to the deepest needs of the human soul. The great master reveals how we can meet the daily challenges to our physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual well-being - by awakening our divine nature, the neglected reality at the core of our being.

Yogananda said, "The greatest romance you can have is the romance with God....He is the Lover and our souls are the beloved, and when the soul meets the greatest Lover of the universe, then the eternal romance begins. The love that you have been seeking for incarnations through all human loves is at last yours."

Topics include: How to Work Without Fatigue; Where are our Departed Loved Ones?; Controlling Your Destiny; Why Evil is a Part of God's Creation; How to cultivate Divine Love.

About the Author: Born in India on January 5, 1893, Paramahansa Yogananda devoted his life to helping people of all races and creeds to realize and express more fully in their lives the true beauty, nobility, and divinity of the human spirit. After graduating from Calcutta University in 1915, Yogananda took formal vows as a monk of India's venerable monastic Swami Order. Two years later, he began his life's work with the founding of a how-to-live school since grown to twenty-one educational institutions throughout India where traditional academic subjects were offered together with yoga training and instruction in spiritual ideals. In 1920, he was invited to serve as India's delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston. His address to the Congress and subsequent lectures on the East Coast were enthusiastically received, and in 1924 he embarked on a cross-continental speaking tour. Over the next three decades, Paramahansa Yogananda contributed in far-reaching ways to a greater awareness and appreciation in the West of the spiritual wisdom of the East. In Los Angeles, he established an international headquarters for Self-Realization Fellowship, the nonsectarian religious society he had founded in 1920. Through his writings, extensive lecture tours, and the creation of Self-Realization Fellowship temples and meditation centers, he introduced hundreds of thousands of truth-seekers to the ancient science and philosophy of Yoga and its universally applicable methods of meditation. Today, the spiritual and humanitarian work begun by Paramahansa Yogananda continues under the direction of Sri Daya Mata, one of his earliest and closest disciples and president of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India since 1955. In addition to publishing his writings, lectures and informal talks (including a comprehensive series of Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons for home study), the society also oversees temples, retreats, and centers around the world.

Babaji and the 18 Siddha Kriya Yoga Tradition by Marshall Govindan - Editorial Reviews - "An excellent contribution to the little known science of immortality." -- C. Srinivasan, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Botany, Annamalai University, India

"It is the most accurate and comprehensive exposition of the ancient Kriya Yoga tradition and method published in English to date" -- E. Ayyappa, a long time disciple of Babaji

Product Description - The first authoritative biography of Babaji, the immortal master made famous by Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi, an all-time best-seller. Babaji lives today near Badrinath, in the upper Himalayan mountains. His body has not aged since the age of sixteen, when centuries ago he attained the supreme state of enlightenment and divine transformation. This followed his initiation into scientific art of Kriya Yoga by two deathless masters, the siddhas Agastyar and Boganathar, who belonged to the "18 Siddha Tradition", famous among the Tamil speaking people of southern India. This rare account, by a long time disciple, reveals their little known stories, ancient culture and present mission, as well as how their Kriya Yoga can be used to bring about the integration of the material and spiritual dimensions of life. Clear explanations of the psychophysiological effects of Kriya Yoga and guidelines for its practice are given. It includes verses from the Siddhas' writings with commentary. A book which will inspire you.

About the Author - Marshall Govindan has practiced Kriya Yoga intensively as a disciple of Babaji since 1969. He studied and practiced Kriya Yoga in India for nearly four years with Yogi S.A.A. Ramaiah, a direct disciple of Babaji, assisting him in the establishment and development of 23 Kriya Yoga centers around the world over two decades. He practiced Babaji's Kriya yoga an average of 8 hours per day for 18 years. After fulfilling certain rigorous conditions, he was asked by Babaji on Christmas day, 1988, to go and teach Kriya yoga to others under his guidance and inspiration. In 1990 he was married for the first time, to Gaetane Annai Ouellet of Quebec in a traditional ceremony at the Chidambaram Shiva temple in South India. In 1991 he authored the bestselling book Babaji and the 18 Siddha Kriya Yoga Tradition. In 1992, he and his wife, Annai founded Babaji's Kriya Yoga Ashram on a beautiful mountain top, 40 acre estate. It is located at 196 Mountain Road, St Etienne de Bolton, Quebec, Canada J0E 1P0., near Montreal. They organize initiations and retreats here year round as well as summer camps which host a variety of teachers. In 1993 he edited and published the first english translation of Thirumandiram: A Classic of Yoga and Tantra by Siddha Thirumoolar. At the end of 1994 he retired after 25 years of work in some of North America's largest corporations, where he integrated the practice of Kriya Yoga with a life of dedicated service as an economist and later as a leading professional and author in the field of computer systems control and auditing.

Yoga Nidra Meditation CD: Extreme Relaxation of Conscious Deep Sleep by Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati (Audio CD) - Editorial Reviews - Product Description - This meditation is an authentic rendering of Yoga Nidra as taught in the Himalayas by the masters of Yoga, Vedanta and Tantra. While it is an advanced meditation practice, anyone can start the practice while watching it deepen over time.

Yoga Nidra literally means "Yogic Sleep." In this deep meditation you train your attention to leave the chatter of the Waking state of mind, go past the fantasy of the Dreaming state, and consciously, intentionally enter the stillness of the Deep Sleep state, yet paradoxically remain awake and in deep meditation. For thousands of years the Yogis have used Yoga Nidra to master the art of sleep, to balance the subtle energies, and to experience greater depths of meditation.

The state of conscious Deep Sleep or Yoga Nidra is underneath, behind, or subtler than meditations at either the Waking or Dreaming levels. This subtle state is called "Prajna," which means "supreme knowing." "Pra" means "supreme," and "jna" means "knowing." The conscious experience of this state is a doorway to higher, formless knowing that has been called the infinite library of wisdom and the teacher within.

The depth of authentic Yoga Nidra comes from inner awareness of the levels of your own self, including your body, breath, and the subtler mind, rather than diverting attention through music or inner fantasies (as pleasant as these may be). This inner exploring through self-awareness is a more refined form of meditation that leads you deeper into the stillness and silence of your own being, while remaining fully awake and aware. The Yoga Nidra methods bring you to a place of awareness where you are able to completely let go of any words, thoughts, images, impressions, or pictures in the mind. You are guided to allow your mind to "empty, empty, empty" though you remain fully awake and clear of mind.

The practices on this CD will gently train your ability to direct your own attention, which is the primary skill in the art of meditation. You will find that you are gradually able to use these methods on your own, without the CD, and the benefits will be with you not only during your practice time, but also during the activities of daily life.

The voice will systematically guide you to explore your physical body, then move through 61 specific points within the body, and then practice ascending breath awareness along the body and spine. Your attention will be brought to the space between the eyebrows, then to the throat, and finally to the heart center, where you will go deep into stillness and silence, beyond the activities of the mind.

The Yoga Nidra CD has five tracks. The first track is an introduction (8:02 minutes), describing the state of Yoga Nidra and the practices on the CD. The next four tracks move through four sequential practices that are listened to together, so as to form a complete practice of 57:24 minutes (CD is 65:36 minutes in total). These four tracks can also be listened to individually, as complete practices unto themselves, which allows you to have the benefits of practice when less time is available.

About the Author - Swami Jnaneshvara is passionate about traditional Yoga meditation as a most profound path to the direct experience of the highest spiritual awakening. In addition to practicing meditation from childhood, from 1994 until the present he has practiced and taught meditation from time to time in Rishikesh, India, including one period of more than five years when he was in continuous residence. He is a student and teacher of the ancient tradition of the Himalayan meditation masters, and received initiation as a monk by Swami Rama of the Himalayas. He continues to teach in both India and USA, and presently lives in Florida. He was born in USA in 1948 and his education includes a BS in Management from Florida State University and an MA in Consciousness, with emphasis in Transpersonal Psychology from John F. Kennedy University, in California. He is devoted to producing the highest quality of guided practices.

Basic Yoga Meditation CD: 3, 7, 11, and 30 Minute Guided Practices by Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati (Audio CD) - Product Description - These four traditional guided Yoga meditation practices of 3, 7, 11, and 30 minutes are for those who want to gain a solid foundation practice in traditional meditation that will lead to advanced meditation. By repeatedly following these basic practices, meditation will naturally deepen, gradually leading to the direct experience of the pure consciousness and joy, which is beyond the mind.

These are authentic renderings of meditation as taught in the Himalayas by the masters of traditional Yoga meditation. The methods are consistent with authentic meditation teachings of the most respected instruction manuals, including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Vedanta meditation of the Upanishads. These guided meditations integrate both mindfulness and concentration meditation, and lead one towards kundalini awakening and the enlightened state of samadhi through the path of meditation.

Each of the four meditations follows the same systematic approach, although they are of different lengths to match your time available and your personal inclination. They each guide your attention inward through the levels of your own body, breath, and mind, allowing your awareness to come to rest in a very relaxed state of deep stillness and silence. This systematic approach of self-awareness is one of the most direct and effective forms of meditation.

Simply decide how long you would like to spend with your meditation, and choose the 3, 7, 11, or 30 minute guided practice. You will discover for yourself that calmness, serenity, and peace of mind can be experienced in even a few minutes.

Following the custom of the ancient sages, the depth of Yoga meditation comes from inner awareness of the levels of your own self, rather than by diverting attention through music, as pleasant as music can be. Therefore, there is intentionally no music in these recordings. This inner exploring through self-awareness is a more refined form of meditation that leads you deeper into the stillness and silence of your own being.

Gently focus your attention on each of the aspects of yourself as the voice guides you, including awareness of your body, then your breath, then your mind, and then beyond. Allow all of the other thoughts, emotions, sensations, images, or impressions to come. It is the nature of the mind for thoughts to come. It is also natural for them to go. As your attention moves systematically inward, you gradually learn to remain undisturbed, unaffected, and uninvolved by the streams of thoughts as they naturally rise and fall. Even a few minutes of stillness and silence, every day, is a very nice gift to give your self.

Guiding Yoga's Light: Lessons for Yoga Teachers by Nancy Gerstein - Editorial Reviews - Product Description - Guiding Yoga's Light: Lessons for Yoga Teachers moves beyond the anatomical aspects of asanas to help instructors present the deeper concepts of yogic philosophy to their students and offer insight into the integration of yogic teachings into everyday life.

Now in an updated, expanded edition, Guiding Yoga's Light presents 74 easy-to-follow, succinct lesson plans offering instruction in hatha yoga, including asana, pranayama, the yamas and niyamas, the chakras, creating mindfulness, and understanding emotions. The text also includes three new, teacher-requested chapters: Salutations in Motion, Lessons of the Heart Center, and Relaxation. For convenient reference, teachers and students can also refer to the vocabulary of Sanskrit pronunciations included in the glossary.

Lesson plans progress from basic yogic concepts important for beginning students to more advanced material. Each lesson plan offers a written script for use in class. For beginning teachers, these scripts provide a helpful structure and set the stage for mindful yoga instruction. More advanced teachers may use these lessons and scripts as a creative departure point for expanding on the wellness effects of asana or focusing the day's practice. For ease of planning and organization, each lesson follows a six-part outline:

* The intention provides the focus for the day's yoga class.
* Approximate time offers the length of each lesson script to help yoga teachers manage class time.
* The lesson embodies the essence of the day's teaching, which is expanded on in the following three sections.
* Asanas for deepening illustrate and incorporate the lesson through body stretch, movement, and sensation.
* Practice off the mat helps students integrate the lesson into their daily lives by providing an assignment, a reminder, or a discussion topic.
* To end each lesson, wise words offer selected quotes, suggestions, or proverbs to remind students of the lesson as they engage in their practice outside the class.

The text takes beginning students and teachers on a journey through the various aspects of yoga to understand the foundations of hatha practice. Beginning with basics of breathing, Guiding Yoga's Light progresses to the physical and spiritual philosophy of the asanas and salutations and ends with lessons to bring clarity, calmness, and relaxation into daily life.

Guiding Yoga's Light: Lessons for Yoga Teachers interprets yoga's 5,000-year-old philosophy in an effort to inspire, delight, and empower yoga students to enrich their physical, emotional, and spiritual lives both on and off the mat. With each lesson, Guiding Yoga's Light demonstrates how the strength, balance, and stretching of the physical practice can inspire a healthy, complete, and joyous existence.

Review - "Nancy's book is helpful for yoga teachers in planning their classes and for practitioners who want to have a class experience. Each lesson is complete with a focus, breathing techniques, selected asanas, yoga philosophy, words of wisdom, and other elements to provide a total yoga experience. I used it in my classes and my students loved it!" -- Sharon Steffensen

365 Yoga by Julie Rappaport - Editorial Reviews - From Publishers Weekly - One of the goals of practicing yoga is finding a balance between action and reflection. Yogis attempting to achieve that objective will find a great helper in Rappaport's chubby little book of reflections, wherein the yoga teacher and writer shares ancient and modern texts that speak to the philosophy of yoga. The diverse collection includes thoughts from well-known sources such as the Bhagavad Gita; philosophers like Goethe; famous yogis including Sri Swami Satchidananda; and inspiring heroes from Mother Teresa to Gandhi to Edith Wharton. Rappaport also writes her own meditations on yoga, which are often matter-of-fact and serve as a welcome change from the sometimes complex and theoretical selections. Readers may opt to read one meditation a day, before or after practicing yoga, and Rappaport's helpful glossary will assist them in understanding such Sanskrit terms as anandatandava (eternal bliss) and mukti (freedom or release from suffering). Will Yoga & Meditation Really Change My Life: Personal Stories from 25 of North America's Leading Teachers by Stephen Cope - Editorial Reviews - From Booklist - Cope, a scholar-in-residence and teacher at the Kripalu Center, examines the widespread growth of Eastern spiritual practices in America through personal interviews with 25 prominent teachers of Buddhism, yoga, and meditation responsible, in part, for this proliferation, including Sylvia Boorstein, Lama Surya Das, Judith Lasater, Larry Rosenberg, and Patricia Walden. Cope asked contributors to write about what they have experienced while conducting their contemplative practice, what fruit the practice has borne in their life, and what the source is of their deepest inspiration. While some spent significant time in traditional Indian ashrams or Zen monasteries, most developed a long-standing contemplative practice in the midst of ordinary American life, and one surprising common thread is how solitary practices positively transformed relationships within the individual's family. Stories of dramatic mystical experiences are few, rather most teachers note that contemplative practice gradually helped them to become kinder, less fearful, and more authentic. Product Description - As one of the largest and most successful yoga-based retreat and education centers in the world, Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Lenox, Massachusetts, attracts many of the leading teachers of yoga and Buddhist meditation to its annual retreat, East meets East: Yoga & Buddhism. In Will Yoga & Meditation Really Change My Life? Stephen Cope brings to the printed page the fascinating dialogue that he has fostered in these retreats.

Cope asks participating teachers to share their Tales from the Path, stories of how the long-term practice of these ancient traditions has changed their lives. The result is an inspirational volume featuring 26 distinct voices telling their stories, how they became interested in these traditions, the teachers who inspired them, and how the practice of yoga and meditation has shaped their lives and perspectives.

The contributors, many of whom are authors of well-known books on these topics, speak of their experiences as real people living in our complex world, complete with spouses, children, aging parents, financial demands, illnesses, injuries, and all of the ordinary aggravations of everyday life. Many of these teachers have studied and explored the practice of yoga or meditation over the course of 30 years and have been pivotal in creating retreat centers, styles of yoga, and teaching techniques that have contributed to the widespread popularity of these practices in mainstream culture.

The stories of these teachers ask the questions, What is possible for me, in my life, right now? How can my practice of yoga and meditation help me lead a more satisfying life? These are questions on which every spiritual seeker and practitioner of yoga and meditation inevitably must reflect.

Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to Over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations by Olivia H. Miller and Nicole Kauffman - Editorial Reviews - From Publishers Weekly - One of the simplest yet most comprehensive yoga books to be published in recent memory, Miller's work could become a classic. Using elegant, gentle prose and graceful line drawings to illustrate poses, the book serves as an excellent introduction for those unfamiliar with or just getting used to breathing in downward facing dog position. Miller, who has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and [has written] for Yoga Journal and other publications, takes a three-pronged approach to teaching yoga, focusing on the equally important components of breathing, poses and meditation. She doesn't spend much time on the history and origins of yoga, and quickly moves to technique. Focusing on hatha yoga, Miller teaches readers breathing exercises and how to warm up, and then proceeds to standing, seated, prone, supine and inverted poses. Subsequent chapters share suggested meditations and suggested flow series. The latter section lays out routines practitioners can follow (among them, the popular sun salutation and camel vinyasa), as well as series of poses that Miller devised [with yoga teacher Paul Howard] that target specific conditions (including ones for anxiety and tension relief, cold prevention and improving circulation) and sports (e.g., running, swimming, tennis and rowing). By giving variations for each pose, Miller makes her book appropriate for all levels, although the positive and upbeat tone will especially comfort beginners struggling with the challenging pigeon or full shoulder-stand positions. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Product Description - From the author of the best-selling Yoga Deck comes Essential Yoga -- the only hatha yoga book to offer this many poses (over 100), this many illustrations (over 180), and this many suggested sequences (over 50). Practical and interactive, it focuses on the poses themselves, providing clear, concise instructions and detailed illustrations for each, all in a lay-flat format that's easy to refer to during yoga practice. It also includes six classic moving meditations (such as Sun Salutation and Camel Vinyasa), 10 beginner-to-advanced sessions, and 48 mini-sequences designed to build strength for specific activities or alleviate health problems. Essential Yoga combines physical poses (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayamas), and meditations (dhyanas) into a simple and complete reference guide for yoga practitioners of all levels. Along the way, author Olivia Miller provides guidance on proper technique and alignment; modifications for beginners or those with knee, neck, or back pain; suggestions for preventing injury; and ways to keep a regular practice interesting and active. For beginners as much as experts looking for one complete book that has it all, Essential Yoga is it.

The Complete Book of Yoga & Meditation for Pregnancy by Theresa Jamieson - Editorial Reviews - From Library Journal - This is a useful resource for the practice of Hatha Yoga during the perinatal period. It focuses primarily on poses, breathing exercises, and meditations, providing easy-to-follow written and photographic instructions. The book is unusually thorough in its directions for individual poses, including explanations of mental and physical benefits, safety precautions, pose variations, breathing instructions, and Sanskrit names. Jamieson, who holds degrees in traditional and herbal medicine, runs a healing sanctuary in Australia, and teaches prenatal yoga, here includes poses typically omitted from more cautious treatments. This is a fun book, rich in detail and background, with birth stories, techniques for dealing with pain, and historical and cultural background. The author's holistic approach will not match that of many readers, but this does not compromise the book's clarity or credibility. This is not, however, a complete treatment of the subject, the title notwithstanding. Although it is more comprehensive than other perinatal yoga books on the market, many aspects of yoga and many poses are not covered. Recommended for public libraries. Noemie Maxwell, Seattle Midwifery Sch., WA - Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The book includes detailed photographs showing correct positions and sequence of movements. The Zen Yoga program promotes a healthy body, mind, and spirit. At a deeper level, a commitment to Zen Yoga can illuminate ways to encourage enlightenment, radiate harmony and live in full awareness of the present moment. Aaron Hoopes book contains simple breath and mind-body exercises that are not out of the reach of ordinary people. Zen Yoga has worked for my patients. Prayer of Heart and Body: Meditation and Yoga As Christian Spiritual Practice by Thomas Ryan - Editorial Reviews - Product Description - If you're looking for clear links between Christian faith and the practice of yoga and meditation, this book is for you. Prayer of Heart and Body will help you integrate teachings from the Christian contemplative tradition into your practice and encourage a new appreciation for the role of the body in prayer. "Yoga," says the author, is "meditation in motion, a way to pray with one's whole being--body, mind and spirit. It was originally designed to prepare people for sitting meditation." The two work powerfully together.

Quoting extensively from such authors as Ignatius, John of the Cross, Rahner and Merton, Ryan explains what is distinctive about Christian meditation compared to some eastern forms, and looks at reincarnation and kundalini energy in the light of Christian faith, respecting the authenticity of other world religions and drawing from their wisdom traditions where appropriate. "Through this, Ryan integrates all that is beautiful, wise and holy in other traditions," says Jean Vanier in his Foreword, for a book that is "unifying and pacifying."

The final section gives explicit instructions on beginning yoga. Using easy-to-follow diagrams, it covers breathing exercises, warm-up exercises, and the postures, including benefits, precautions and contraindications for each. In all, the basic aim of this beautifully written book is to assist the millions of Christians who today are practicing meditation or yoga or both, to consciously integrate them into their Christian spirituality as effective instruments for their personal development in prayer and daily living.

About the Author - Thomas Ryan, C.S.P., directs the Paulist North American Office for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations in New York City. Father Ryan also leads retreats in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

The Four Yogas: A Guide to the Spiritual Paths of Action, Devotion, Meditation and Knowledge by Swami Adiswarananda - Editorial Reviews - From Publishers Weekly - In America, Yoga is primarily understood as a series of physical exercises. But in this book, Adiswarananda, a monk who follows the influential 19th-century guru Ramakrishna and teaches in New York City, unpacks with clarity the spiritual systems of Yoga. A Hindu philosophy, Yoga is intended to bring about union with God. The author examines the four types of Yoga referred to in the title, using the same organizing concepts (philosophy, psychology, practices, obstacles) so that differences and similarities among the paths can be clarified, even about such heady topics as "ultimate reality." Along the way, a good deal of the Hindu understanding of God and human nature is translated, literally and figuratively, into Western-friendly ideas and terms. ("Meditation is not relaxation, as is often thought nowadays.") Sanskrit terms are explained in a glossary. Characteristic of explanations of philosophy, the text, though clear, tends toward lecture-like dryness. This would make a good reference for students of Eastern spirituality. Meditation For Dummies (Book and CD edition) by Stephan Bodian and Dean Ornish - Amazon.com Review - "To tell you the truth, you can learn the basics of meditation in five minutes," asserts Stephan Bodian, meditation instructor, psychotherapist, and former editor-in-chief of Yoga Journal. You can also study meditation for years, exploring its subtleties. Meditation for Dummies is a simple, clear introduction to the basics of meditation, including an overview of dozens of techniques, practices, and specific meditations, plus direction for going deeper. You get step-by-step instructions for a variety of meditations, including body position, mental concentration, where to put your attention, what to contemplate or notice, physical movements, and breathing. A nice touch is the recurring "traditional wisdom": ancient stories or anecdotes that make a point. This book is useful whether you want the nuts and bolts for getting started in the next minute or you want to dip your mind into different practices and philosophies. Nothing is too elementary to explain: "how to sit up straight--and live to tell about it," what to wear, dealing with fear and self-judgment, and what to do when you get "stuck." You also get plenty of information about the benefits and varieties of meditation. You're bound find and develop a practice that feels right for you. --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal - Absurd as it may seem, the publishers of the immense "...for Dummies" series have now produced a beginner's guide to meditation written by the former editor-in-chief of Yoga Journal, and this entry is as clearly written, carefully organized, sensible, and un-self-serious as all the others. Bodian's years of experience as a writer and teacher have served him well here, as have the presentation skills of the publisher. This handy manual will be consulted and re-read in secret as much as its more technical predecessors. Highly recommended. The Secret Universal Mind Meditation by Kelly Howell (Audio CD) - Product Description - The Secret Universal Mind Meditation imparts the sacred truth spiritual masters have taught for centuries. This truth is real and powerful. It starts by changing your belief system, slowly, subtly and gently while you sleep. As you are lulled into blissful slumber, secret messages are whispered into your ears--first audibly, and then just below the level of consciousness.

Over days and weeks to come, your conscious and your subconscious mind will accept the secret as true. Without knowing how or why, everything you need and desire will come to you through communing with the Universal Mind.

With this program you will overcome limiting, outmoded beliefs that have hindered your ability to create the life you've always wanted. While theta and delta waves gently lull you to sleep, your mind is re-programed with new knowledge and beliefs that unleash your power to create a new reality; a reality that fulfills your deepest needs and desires.

Through nightly listening, your subconscious will accept the information it receives as true. When this happens, what you need and desire comes to you. And there is nothing you need to do except relax and listen. If you fall asleep while listening, that's even better; the messages are still absorbed into your subconscious. The results are profound.

About the Author - With over 2 million audio programs in print, Kelly Howell is highly acclaimed for her pioneering work in healing and mind expansion. She has been actively involved in personal development and consciousness research for more than two decades and is recognized as a thought-leader in the field of personal transformation.

Meditation As Medicine: Activate the Power of Your Natural Healing Force by Dharma Singh Khals - Editorial Reviews - Amazon.com Review - Long-term meditators experience 80 percent less heart disease and 50 percent less cancer than nonmediators, according to a large body of studies. Meditation has been shown to improve sleep and reduce chronic pain. Not all meditation is equally effective, however. Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., has developed a form of advanced meditation he calls "Medical Meditation," which "more fully addresses every element of our physical and ethereal makeup... a full-service approach." Medical Meditation is an adaptation of kundalini yoga combined with meditation, using specific breathing patterns, posture and movements, mantras, and mental focus.

Different Medical Meditation focus on different physiological benefits for specific conditions, so once you've learned the basics, you can choose a specific Medical Meditation for high blood pressure, to improve digestion, or to strengthen the immune system or the heart, for example. Line drawings illustrate the postures, and Khalsa's stories about his patients are inspiring and involving.

Meditation as Medicine is not a brisk read or a "read-today-do-tomorrow" guide, however. Be prepared to immerse your mind in a study of chakras, mantras, breathing exercises, movement exercises, poses, and meditations--and discipline yourself to practice Khalsa's techniques patiently. Are the benefits worth all the work involved? Khalsa thinks so: "For the ill and injured, Medical Meditation is not a problem. It's a solution."

Khalsa is both a physician and a yogi. He is board certified in anesthesiology, pain management, and antiaging medicine, and president and medical director of the Alzheimer's Prevention Foundation. Cowriter Cameron Stauth, author of 12 books, was named Journalist of the Year by the National Health Foundation. --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal - Here, Khalsa presents a compelling look at the value of "medical meditation," a form of therapy based on the principles of kundalini yoga, a discipline that he has practiced for over 20 years. Using references to current medical research and case histories from his medical practice, Khalsa builds a case for the efficacy of medical meditation to assist in healing many diseases. A firm proponent of the power of mind, body, and spirit to overcome illness, he believes that the ethereal body can help the physical body to heal and vice versa. Throughout the program, the author stresses the need to use traditional Western medical techniques in combination with medical meditation to achieve the best results. Khalsa's narration is excellent; however, it is hard to follow some of his instructions for meditation positions. Those who are not already motivated to meditate, or who are not facing life-threatening illness, may find his daily regimen for maximum results overwhelming. Highly recommended for libraries that serve audiences interested in current techniques to increase the healing connection of mind and body.
